Assuming for the sake of argument that life developed from non-living, complex chemicals, we would expect there to be examples along a continuum from organic non-living molecules to unambiguously living cells with strange entities in between. The continued debate over whether viruses are alive says more to me about the human mind's hatred of fuzzy inter-categorical entities than it does about viruses. This shit is pretty cool, though.
