Saturday, March 31 2007: Stabby Stabby Bush Baby
I'm not sure why this is being claimed as the first time chimps have made weapons to hunt with. It's well known that they fish termites out of mounds using sticks or straw fashioned for that purpose. I guess it's not really hunting unless ultraviolence is involved or the prey is cute.
The idea that human tool use is devoid of analogues anywhere else in the animal kingdom has been repeatedly dashed - definitively. I assume it is perpetuated because of our conceit. It seems unlikely that everything we think of as uniquely human - language, forethought, logical reasoning, social morality, technology, the insane belief that we are not mortal - is encoded in that 1.5% of the genome we don't share with the members of genus Pan.
