OpenSchema
I know I'm about 5 years behind the times, but I've recently started playing with the OpenSchema() method of the ADODB.Connection object. You can get at a lot of useful information that way. For example, when importing data, you can read the ForeignKeys schema to figure out the order data needs to be loaded to avoid violating key constraints or get at extended properties, like column descriptions.
Public Function GetColumnDescription(cnn As ADODB.Connection, sTableName As String,
sColumnName As String) As String
Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
Dim sDescr As String
' Init description
sDescr = ""
Set rs = cnn.OpenSchema(adSchemaColumns)
With rs
.Filter = "TABLE_NAME='" & sTableName & "' AND COLUMN_NAME='" & sColumnName & "'"
If .RecordCount <> 0 Then
If Not IsBlank(.Fields("DESCRIPTION")) Then
sDescr = CStr(.Fields("DESCRIPTION").Value)
End If
End If
.Filter = adFilterNone
.Close
End With
Set rs = Nothing
' Return description
GetColumnDescription = sDescr
End Function

Gear ratio and RPM
From the Wikipedia
article on gear ratios we learn that:
vcar = (Ctire * vengine) /
(grgear * grdiff)
For those of us with no tach, RPM can be inferred using the
following formula:
vengine = vcar * (grgear * grdiff)
/ Ctire
In cars with transaxles, grdiff is the final drive ratio, otherwise it'd be the gear ratio in the rear differential.

Install MS SQL Server 2005 Express
Microsoft is kind of a suck, right? So, I've had SQL Server 2005 Express install fail the first time through on 2 separate machines, so I figure this may be a common problem. Fixing it goes like this (yes, I'm not making it up).
- Download SQLEXPR.EXE from the Visual Studio download area
- Run SQLEXPR.EXE to have it extract all its bullshit and then run the installation wizard.
- SQLEXPR is going to extract its shit into a root directory folder with a huge hex number for the name. Find that folder and copy everything in it except for $shtdwn$.req to another folder, because you will need to run one of the files after the install fails. However, SQLEXPR is very helpful and will delete all these files, if you don't save a copy.
- After your installation fails, complaining about a corrupted package 'sqlncli.msi' then close the wizard and let it delete its files.
- Go to your copy folder, go to the setup sub-folder, right-click sqlncli.msi, and select Uninstall from the context menu. Confirm that you really meant what you said.
- This will do some shit for a bit and then close.
- You can then run SQLEXPR.EXE again and this time it will actually install SQL Server 2005.

Respect the Geezers
I was watching Henry Rollins's "spoken word" thing on IFC and he had an aside about how he always respected the elderly because they " had had their hearts broken more than you, were smarter than you, and most of their friends were dead".
Maybe I'm just hanging around with all the wrong elderly people, but they don't seem to be any more or less intelligent as a group than anyone else. Actually, in my experience, the elderly often seem to be out of touch with minor events of the past 50-60 years such as desegregation and the iPod.
As for their broken hearts and dead friends, that's just life. I don't really see how "not dying for a long time" immediately marks one as worthy of respect. It seems to me that there ought to be something extraordinary about your character if you are to be respected. Based on the number of Baby Boomers retiring now (whose social security benefits I get to pay for), it's obvious that there's nothing extraordinary any more about being old.

*Void
This is what you get when you start googling on Nietzsche and voids:
- "The Matrix" is a Nietzschean parable of cosmic Enantiodromia or something...
- The decline of dialogue in the West is a symptom of lividity.
- Post-modern "double-standard" foreign policy.
- wrong.
-
Indra's Net and postmodernism -
The self-existence (Sanskrit, svabhva) that Mahyna refutes corresponds to the "self-presence" which Derrida criticizes in textual terms, by showing that every process of signification, including self-consciousness, is an economy of differences:
The play of differences supposes, in effect, syntheses and referrals, which forbid at any moment, or in any sense, that a simple element be present in and of itself, referring only to itself... There are only, everywhere, differences and traces of traces.

More Voids
The answer to my previous question is that I didn't have anymore clandestine "Into the Void" covers on my HDD. However, I went on a quest to discover how many covers have been recorded.
My undying pal Google told me about a thrash metal band, Exhorder, that did a cover of "Into the Void" on their album, "The Law". So, of course, I acquired their discography for the sake of that one song. Second Hand Songs tells me that another band called "Rise" did a cover of "Into the Void". Don't you worry, dear reader, I'll track that track down, too. That's what I do.

Unida
Beowulf wonders if the author of this article is related to our friendly neighborhood A Bennett. Probably not.
The story of Unida is pretty much the story of why the RIAA sucks. Incidentally, Unida eventually gave away copies of the unreleased album at shows and it can be downloaded fairly easily off the internet. In fact, there's a person with a username suspiciously similar to mine who has released it on a tracker near you. Not that I release or download music.
