Happy Thanksgiving

I'm putting this up as an exemplar of the clueless luddite who should not ever be allowed to plug his machine into the Net. Please, do note that the contents of the email, while not only failing to be text-only is not topical to the subject of the thread.

Oh, I guess it's technically Thanksgiving. Happy Fucking Thanksgiving.

Quite a collection

Starting in Dickerson today, I was behind this 1982 era Ford pickup. The thing was all beat to hell; a real piece of shit, and it was running so rich that I didn't think it would have been safe to light a match in my vehicle's passenger compartment. (Of course, the "Flammable Gas 2" hazard sign above the tailpipe did little to quell my anxiety.)

Anyway, what really caught my eye was the collection of bumperstickers on the tailgate.:

"Keep winter cool" "God is my favorite" "Hang up & Drive"

                        "fictional character"

			  "Boycott France!"

			                     "stopthedrugwar.org"

So, the driver, apparently is an atheist, pothead, jingoist treehugger who's not all that fond of cell phones.

Boycott as Means of Social Change

I was watching something last night on TV, don't remember what the title was, what the channel was, or anything. It was about the Bus Boycotts down in Talabama and the ensuing trial of Rosa Parks ("They messed with the wrong one now!").

Anyway, here was a community that effectively energized a nation-wide movement to effect real change in the Republic just by banding together and not riding on buses. After my attention waned, and I changed the channel, I began to wonder how likely it'd be that any real social change could be brought about with a series of such prosaic actions.

I'm inclined to believe it would not be possible, but I'm at a loss for why. Maybe the Civil Rights movement was an idea whose time had come and we don't have any great ideas ready to be birthed today. Perhaps the citizenry lacks the social conscience to see the value of taking such a small act in the service of a larger social cause. I think it must have something to do with how frenetic and deluded we are by corporate America. But what do I know, I can't stay on a single TV channel for more than 5 minutes.

Google Plex

It's sad that the sole "useful" purpose this blog could be put to
(as commented on below) is an idea that has already been done.

I'm really sick of being a poseur.

By the way, according to Google the flog is still the only place on the web to find the phrase "Catholic ass sex", whatever that's worth.

Snot

That's probably enough vitriol; it's almost like I have started taking this forum seriously. Definitely, a course of action to be avoided.

Now, for something completely different. A man who throws up on a regular basis while trying to clear his throat. On Monday, and again today, I actually vomited while trying to clear my throat in the morning because my mucus was too thick to snort out of my nasal passages and then expectorate before my gag receptors went into panic mode.

Needless to say, that definitely puts a sour note on the day.

6 yr old's rant

So, there I was sitting in the "Ruby Tuesday's" in Charles Town
minding my own business, waiting overlong for the frazzled waitress to
bring the check when I'm suddenly shockingly aware of what this little girl
sitting at the table behind me is ranting about. The word that caught my
attention was abortion.
"No you heard wrong, there's no earthly reason for a 6 year to be
talking about abortion..."

But, no I was wrong. She was railing against the evils of a abortion rights.
She then went on to squawk about how terrible it was that "there are
these people in Washington that want to take 'under god' out
of the Pledge. It's just insane. These people are mentally ill."

It's the proliferation and inculcation of this kind of completely uncritical, reason-free
thinking that leads me to believe this world will never be right.
We have these gigantic cerebra that we've spent some 2 million years
evolving, but we'd rather confine our discourse to reactions that could
just as easily be regurgitated by some portion of the reptilian brain.

It could be said that I am blowing this way out of proportion, since the
child was only 6 or 7, at most, but the troubling thing is not that the
child was saying stupid things, but rather that at some points adults
(probably the adults at the dinner table) taught her those stupid things.

Wakeup, Dead Man!

With Bono, I've been wondering lately if there's any order to be found
in the disorder. For the longest time I've subscribed to the myth of the
hidden order. "This all makes sense once you understand the metaphysical
underpinnings."

At first, I didn't realize there *was* any disorder. Then I freaked out
and pretended some Jew on a stick made up the hidden order and encoded it
in a collection of shitten manuscripts that are so bogus that even
children go "Are you fucking kidding me?".

About 10 years too late, I figured out that the Jesus train wasn't headed
anywhere, and consoled myself that there really was order. It was to be
found in the precision and orderly descriptions offered by physics, but
a lot of the precision of science is illusory at best. Science is just as
constrained by human ignorance as anything else. It's certainly the best
tool we have.

But I've got this sinking feeling that there really isn't any order to be
found. That the question itself is bullshit to start out with. All we've
got is what there is and the theories we lay on top of it are "things which
exist *only* in the understanding" just like god.

Bloglines

In other news, I'm sick of fucking around trying to coax bloglines into reading my properly formatted RSS file and just downloaded a freeware RSS Reader. It's probably some pain in the ass caching thing. If I rename the file and subscribe to it through bloglines, I see all the entries. But for some reason bloglines keeps holding onto the old, empty version of grendel_data.xml.

Supposedly, feeds are updated hourly, but from what I could glean from Google it's more like every 48 hours or so. And even then there are some subset of feeds which never get updated after the inital subscription.

Martyrdom

From the Book List: "Clearly inspired by the Columbine shootings and the martyrdom of the one student..."

Much hay was made out of the stand of Cassie Bernall in the Columbine High School library, but, unfortunately for those who'd love to profit from her death (i.e., filthy whores like her parents and their pastor), it probably isn't true.

Sincerely, bitter atheist asshole

Fuckers!

I am none too pleased with Brinkster at the moment.
Whilst using their "new and improved" File Manager, my main include file (which has 21 KB worth of nifty functions) had its contents dumped into no where land and replaced with the innards of default.asp (with its 5 KB of useless presentation crap) presumably due to some bug (since not even the "new and improved" File Manager has a "Save As" feature for me to inadvertantly use.

Fortunately, I was able to grab a copy from about 15:30 this afternoon off of my work computer, and fix everything back up to where it was supposed to be. I uploaded all the updated files (including the correct FormUtils.inc), but just as I went to test out all my great new code, the fucking webserver went down.

The little IE MS-Flag is a-waving, waving, waving. Ok, this is just some IE cache bullshit, let's fire up Lynx. Hmm...unexpected network response. Fuck!

So I read some of Steve's blog for 20 minutes while the fuckers fixed their fucking servers. Fuck.
